🌿 Steps in Sugarcane Juice Production:

1. Harvesting the Sugarcane:

  • Sugarcane stalks are usually harvested when they are mature (around 10-18 months old).
  • The leaves are stripped, and the stalks are cut close to the ground since the lower part contains the most sucrose.

2. Cleaning the Stalks:

  • The harvested canes are thoroughly washed to remove dirt, mud, and any pesticides.
  • This step is crucial to maintain hygiene and prevent contamination.

3. Juice Extraction:

  • The clean stalks are fed into a sugarcane crusher machine (usually made of stainless steel for food safety).
  • The machine squeezes the stalks, extracting the juice while separating the fibrous pulp (called bagasse).
  • Sometimes, the cane may be crushed multiple times to extract the maximum amount of juice.

4. Filtration:

  • The raw juice is filtered using muslin cloths or fine mesh sieves to remove bits of cane fiber and impurities.
  • Some larger producers may use mechanical filters or UV sterilization for better quality.

5. Optional Additions:

  • To enhance the flavor and health benefits, ingredients like lemon juice, ginger, mint, or a pinch of salt can be added.
  • For commercial packaging, preservatives (like citric acid) might be added to extend shelf life.

6. Packaging (for Commercial Production):

  • For mass production, the juice is pasteurized (heated to kill bacteria) and packaged in glass bottles, tetra packs, or plastic pouches.
  • Modern methods may use cold-press technology to retain nutrients while ensuring the juice remains safe for longer.

7. Storage:

  • Fresh sugarcane juice spoils quickly (within a few hours if not refrigerated).
  • Commercially, it’s stored at low temperatures (around 4°C or lower) to prevent fermentation and spoilage.
