Watermelon is known for being extremely refreshing, sweet, and rich in water content—making it a popular fruit in hot climates.

🌱 HOW TO PRODUCE WATERMELON (STEP BY STEP)

1. Site Selection

  • Needs full sun and a warm climate.

  • Ideal temperature: 25–35°C (77–95°F).

  • Needs well-drained, sandy loam soil with pH 6.0–7.5.

2. Seed Selection

  • Choose good quality, disease-resistant seeds.

  • Popular varieties: Crimson Sweet, Sugar Baby, Charleston Gray, Jubilee, etc.

3. Land Preparation

  • Plow and harrow the land to loosen soil.

  • Form ridges or mounds to improve drainage.

  • Apply organic compost or manure before planting.

4. Planting

  • Spacing: 1–1.5 meters between plants; 2–3 meters between rows.

  • Method: Sow seeds directly or transplant seedlings.

  • Time: After the last frost in cool climates, or at the beginning of the dry season in tropical regions.

5. Watering (Irrigation)

  • Keep soil moist during early growth.

  • Reduce water near harvest to concentrate sugars in the fruit.

  • Avoid overwatering, especially when fruits start forming.

6. Fertilization

  • Apply nitrogen early for leaf and vine growth.

  • Apply phosphorus and potassium during flowering and fruiting.

  • Optionally use foliar spray for micronutrients.

7. Pollination

  • Watermelons depend on bees and other insects for pollination.

  • Avoid using insecticides during the flowering stage.

8. Weed & Pest Control

  • Use mulch or manual weeding.

  • Common pests: Aphids, fruit flies, beetles.

  • Common diseases: Powdery mildew, anthracnose — treat with organic or chemical controls.

9. Harvesting

  • Harvest 70–100 days after planting.

  • Signs of ripeness:

    • Dry tendril near stem.

    • Yellow patch on the underside.

    • Dull, hollow sound when tapped.
